Tour Description
The Aboriginal people of Australia have a culture and traditions that stretch back into the mists of time. These people have a special relationship with the animals, birds, plants and the very landscape itself. Spend a day discovering the spiritual ‘Dreaming’, traditional skills, food and medicines of ‘the bush’. Explore and share this ancient culture.
Your expert 4WD guide will pick you up from the Adelaide metropolitan area and then you will travel through the Adelaide Hills, passing historic townships and areas important in Aboriginal tradition. Emerging from the Mt Lofty Ranges, you arrive at Lake Alexandrina where the Murray River spreads out before ending its journey to the sea.
At Wellington, you cross the river by the ferry departing next to the Old Courthouse and Police Station. Along the shores of Lake Alexandrina you will pass Poltalloch Station, an historic homestead with all the grandeur of a bygone era. This road brings you through Narrung (a mixed community), the site of Australia’s only inland lighthouse and to the Aboriginal community of Raukkan. From here, you follow some of the back roads to arrive at the Coorong, one of the Worlds most significant World Heritage Listed wetlands. This narrow neck of water is of great importance both in Aboriginal culture and to the multitude of birds that live here or migrate through the region.
The 4WD track through the Coorong National Park takes you through the habitat of kangaroos, emus and other bird life. The scenery here is also rich in history. Having travelled through the land of the Ngarrindjeri people, you now arrive at ‘Camp Coorong’. Here you will meet the traditional people of this country. They will share with you stories of their history and their culture, their beliefs and traditions. While at ‘Camp Coorong’ you will have the opportunity - when the reeds are available - to join a traditional basket-weaving workshop and try your hand at learning the local skills.
A ‘Dreaming’ (creation stories) presentation will help you share some of their traditions. You will see the local plants that are used as food and medicine. You will experience some of the art, craft and history of the Ngarrindjeri people. Your experiences at ‘Camp Coorong’ will provide you with the most comprehensive insight into the diverse life and living culture of Australia’s Aboriginal people.
