Tour Description
One of the best ways to explore the Flinders Ranges is in relaxed comfort with your own personal driver/guide.
Day 1 - Your adventure takes you north into the wine region of the Clare Valley. On your way, you will travel through old towns with quaint cottages and historic buildings. At Clare, you have an opportunity to visit one of the fine boutique wineries in this region. The legendary lilac haze of the Flinders Ranges looms ever closer and you are now in the habitat of Australia’s famous wildlife – not only kangaroos and emus live here in abundance, but also many species of birds and reptiles.
We continue on through vast sheep station country into the heart of the Flinders Ranges. There will be an opportunity for a poignant stop at one of the ghost towns for some stories and photos.
Wilpena Pound Resort is your destination tonight. The area surrounding the Pound offers some glorious walking trails and excellent accommodation.
O/n – Wilpena Pound Resort or optional Rawnsley Park Luxury Eco Villas
Day 2 - your expert guide will take you through some of the most unforgettable scenery. The Flinders Ranges is home to a vast number of native animals and birds. Some of Australia’s best-known animals reside amongst the gum trees and on the steep, ragged slopes of the gorges.
Drive through Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges to the western side of the range. This region was once an ancient seabed and it now carries some very important early fossils. Here you will find some more than 600-million-year-old, a time span that defies understanding. If you’re lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of the rare and endangered yellow footed rock wallaby.
Visit the historic railway town of Quorn, the home to the famous Pichi Richi steam train, which still runs on the original Ghan tracks. Follow alongside the track through the Pichi Richi Pass to spectacular views of the Spencer Gulf and Port Augusta.
As you travel along the coastal road you will see the old ports and seaside towns that were so important in the development of this region. The countryside slowly changes as you approach Adelaide, but the memory of the raw majesty that is the Flinders Ranges will remain with you.
